Every year golf manufacturers come out with new improvements for their golf clubs. If you watch golf on TV you are inundated with those commercials.
With all the advertisements and endorsements from professional golfers, it is impossible to know what the best golf clubs are for you. Some of us are swayed by our favorite golfer and other by the perceived best manufacturer. The selection of clubs and pricing is extensive and confusing too.
So how does the average weekend golfer choose the best golf clubs for his or her game?
There are 5 things that you need to consider before you make your purchase.
1.) Budget - This is the most important starting point. Golf clubs can range from under $100 for a putter to a couple of thousand for a set. The average cost of a new set of irons, can range from $400 to $1500 depending on the manufacturer.
Pick a price range that fits your budget and stick to it. There are plenty of choices.
2.) Shaft - The stiffness and type of shaft that you have on your golf clubs will make a huge difference in how well you strike the ball. If you shaft is too stiff, you won't get the flex you need to generate good club head speed. This will affect the distance and direction of your shot.
If the shaft is not stiff enough, your shaft will flex way too much and this will have a different affect all together.
3.) Clubhead - Should your irons be forged or cavity backed? Many of the professional golfers prefer to use forged irons, but in the last few years we have seen more of them switch to cavity backed irons. The cavity back iron has a larger sweet spot and is more forgiving.
Another thing to consider is what type of woods I should have in my bag. (We know they are no longer made out of wood) The 460cc driver is the most common, but there are different shapes, sizes and alloys being used depending on the manufacturer.
If you are going for a new driver, it is a good idea to consider replacing all your woods. Having your driver and 3 wood matching will give you a better feel.
4.) Hybrids - Hybrids have become more popular. They are very versatile and many have replaced their 3, 4 and 5 irons with hybrids. This is one change that I would seriously consider. Many amateurs struggle with the long irons, so this is really a no-brainer.
When it is time to purchase new golf clubs, take time to investigate before you plunge in. It is definitely worth the time and effort. I would suggest that you try out a few different brands before you buy.
