How Buying Golf Clubs Is Like Searching For A Lover!

Two sayings immediately come to mind and ultimately seem very appropriate whether you're discussing buying a new set of golf clubs or searching for a new lover.

The first, "to each, his own". The second, "different strokes for different folks".

Whether you're a young buck just starting out or an experienced old pro, before you drop a few bucks on a new set of golf clubs (or a beautiful woman) we need to talk about your "feelings".

Don't worry though. I don't want to talk about your Mommy or your emotionally troubled times as a child.

The feelings we're going to talk about are all about "feeling good" and "feeling right". We're going to talk about "hands on feelings". And the fact that what feels right to me may not feel right to you, and vice versa.

Here's what I mean; The most important thing to think about when choosing a new set of clubs (or a new lover) is to be absolutely sure they feel comfortable in your hands.

The better they feel in your hands the better your chances of enjoying the game (and life in general) and actually improving your scores over time.

Okay, so we know that there really is scientific method for choosing the right set of clubs (or the right lover). But I want to offer you a couple of handy tips that may be helpful in choosing the best set of golf clubs (or lover) for YOU.

The grips (hips or handles) have to feel good in your hands!

Since the grips are your only real "hands on" contact with your club, you need to sample at least three or four different shapes and textures to make sure you find the right one. I say this because there are several variations to choose from. There are round grips, ribbed grips, corded and non-corded and each has a different feel.

You want one that feels completely comfortable and natural in your hands. You have to go full "hands on" to find one suits you best. You'll know when you've got the right one because they'll feel like they were made especially for you.

The weight has to feel right!

You don't want "too heavy" and you don't want "too light", you want "just right"!

Traditionally, on a matched set of golf clubs, club weight is the same from the 3 iron all the way to the 9 iron. And since this is 70% of your club set, it's important to feel comfortable with your irons.

For beginners, it is generally best to choose clubs with a graphite shaft (lightweight and flexible) versus steel because of the lighter weight. This serves to help you gain more power in your swing.

You don't want flexibility in a pitching wedge, sand wedge or putter however, and therefore steel shafts are appropriate for these clubs.

Your choice of playing partners can have an effect on your game.

And nothing ruins a good game faster than having to play with a dipstick for a partner. The best advice I can offer on this is to tell you something you should already know... don't play with dicks!

How to Buy Golf Clubs Online - What to Look for in an Online Club Builder

Are you in the market for new golf clubs? More and more golfers are considering making their club purchase online. Custom clubs are carving out an online niche. What should you look for in an online club builder? Look for the same traits in an online retailer that you would in a brick and mortar store. Because the online store is somewhere in cyber space and you may not be able to visit an actual business, there are some things to consider. The most obvious is only order from a secure server. The other thing would be to be cautious of sites that don't allow for custom options, these retailers are probably drop shipping products and can't give the service needed to help a lot of golfers.

As a professional club builder I have built in bias towards the custom club segment of the market. I also believe that the custom fit option is far better than buying stock "off the rack clubs". Custom clubs give golfers the option of clubs that are at least as good as any brand name, (most of the time better), at a significantly lower price.

The best way to have clubs fit to your swing is to get what is known as a dynamic fitting. This is where the golfer actually hits shots, and measurements are taken to determine the best fit options. This obviously can't be done online. The next best option can be done online, and that is static fitting. In a static fitting the customer answers a series of questions, takes measurements, and submits them to the club builder to determine the best fit.

When choosing an online club fitter, look for someone that has professional club building credentials. Look for someone that has personal references, someone that is willing to talk to you personally. A large part of club fitting is an interaction between golfer and club fitter. Measurements alone are not always an absolute indicator. For example, I had a customer come into my shop this week looking for a new driver. His swing speed measured 105 mph. This would generally indicate the player needs a stiff flex shaft. Because of the load this player put on the club, he actually needed an "X" flex shaft. I've seen enough of these exceptions to the rule that I believe a conversation should be part of the online buying experience. During a dynamic fitting session, the club fitter will have an interaction with the player. If I spend an hour with a player during a dynamic session, I should be able to spend a few minutes on the phone with someone from another area for a static fitting.

An important quality of an online fitter is how do they stand behind their products? The guarantee can make the difference between real value and shoddy craftsmanship. Many component manufacturers will warrant their heads and shafts against manufacturing defects, but they don't back products that have been deemed "abused" or improperly assembled. The club builder's guarantee should cover these issues. No club builder will guarantee a club that some one that has tried to use a club to chop down a tree, or thought a club could fly, but for all but the worst case, the club builder will back his or her workmanship.

Finally, to get the most from an online fitting experience is to answer any questions the club fitter has as brutally honest as possible. If you hit your drives 200 yards with a huge banana slice, don't let your ego get in the way, and say you hit drives 250 down the middle. I had a call from a golfer that told me he was a beginner, and he hit his drives on the average of about 290 yards and always in the fairway. He wanted a club to give him more distance. I don't think he was trying to lie about his game, but, I believe that he was not a good judge of distance and he only remembered the ones in the fairways. The more information that you can give the club fitter, the closer you can get to a perfectly fit club.

This guide can be used for brick and mortar club builders as well as online. The club buying experience shouldn't be intimidating or difficult. Getting clubs that fit your individual swing will help you achieve lower scores, more enjoyment, and save you enough money to play more rounds.

Advantages to Buying Golf Club Sets

Some golfers prefer to select each club in their bag individually based on its reputation for performance or the purported advantages of that particular club and mix and match manufacturers. However, this is not always the most advantageous way to gain a competitive advantage in the game. There are advantages to buying a complete set from one golf club maker.

Complete Set Benefits

Arguably the most important advantage to be gained from buying a golf club set is that each club is made consistently and will provide consistency of swing mechanics. Individual irons and woods have the same general weight, feel, and balance, unlike adding in a hickory-shafted club which would give the golfer a much different experience. No matter what company manufactures the set, a golfer can feel the same swing with every club in the bag.

What this means to the golfer is that he or she can perfect their balance with this consistency of swing. It allows the golfer to concentrate on the game instead of adjusting to the club. Since golf club sets all use the same grips on each club, this is another factor which does not need adjustment on the course.

Incomplete Sets

Golfers who choose to select each club individually often end up without a complete golf club set. Some choose to replace a particular type of club one year and then plan on replacing the rest in subsequent years. Unfortunately, sometimes this just does not happen, either because of the cost or the time involved. By the time a golfer buys new woods to go with the irons he replaced previously, those irons probably need to be purchased again, too. It becomes a vicious cycle to obtain a complete set of new clubs.

Price is a big consideration when deciding whether to purchase individual golf clubs or those in a complete set. Golf club sets will always be more cost effective than buying one club at a time. Even when the same manufacturer makes individual clubs and sets, the golf club sets will be less expensive.

While it may make sense to buy an individual club here and there as new technology comes out and manufacturers create an exceptional driver or putter, overall buying golf club sets provides more a benefit to the typical golfer.

5 Tips to Buying Golf Clubs

As we all know, when you play golf having the right equipment is paramount, I don't mean by that that you have to go out and spend a fortune buying the best equipment available but just that it must suit your game. Finding the right clubs for you can be a daunting task as there is a multitude of choice. To help you choose the right club for you we have come up with 5 tips to consider when choosing your next golf clubs.

Ok first step is to decide on your skill level. Are you a beginner, a seasoned good club player or a single figure handicapper? You must be honest with yourself here as different clubs suit different skill levels and if you are an average golfer playing expert clubs this could have a negative impact on your game. Choose clubs that will help you play the game better not ones that look good on the first tee.
Golf clubs are available to suit any budget; you can spend a hundred pounds or a thousand pounds but it is important to stay within your budget. Spending on golf equipment can easily get out of hand and what will the wife say if she can't get her two weeks in the sun so you can show off your new expensive clubs. Remember just because a golf club costs less it doesn't mean it performs worse. How many times have you played against someone who has, what you would consider an inferior driver, but they place it down the middle of the fairway every time. If it suits your game and budget then it is right for you.
Next have a think about how you play the game, what is your shot shape? Do you hit the ball high or low? Do you hit the ball with a slice or a fade? Do you swing fast or slow? Again clubs will have features that suit each of the shot types and you can find clubs that will help you hit the ball more consistently and straighter.
Next decide how often you play. Do you just play in the weekly medal or most days throughout the summer? There is no point in buying the top priced gear if you play 5 times a year. On the other hand if you play all the time and are reasonably proficient at the game then why not spend a little extra; after all it is your main hobby it seems.
Lastly research and research some more. The internet means that there is so much information available to us which can help in golf club selection. This will range from golf magazines articles and manufacturers websites to reviews by people like you and me telling you how they got on with the clubs. This can be the most useful as it is real stories by real people without the sales pitch you might get from a manufacturer. Also online you will find the best prices and can ensure you get the right product at the right price.

So when you're in the market for some new golf clubs follow these 5 tips and I'm sure before long you will be sporting some nifty new clubs that help you hit the ball cleaner, further and you will have some money left over in the bank.

Why You Should Buy Golf Clubs Online

While it might seem unconventional to buy your golf clubs online, this is how millions of golfers are buying their equipment these days. Online golf stores, covering more categories than you could imagine, have appeared on the Internet...and they're not going away. While there are obvious attractions for golf equipment sellers to take their business online (eg global reach, low overheads) there are also many benefits for savvy buyers.

Selection

A pretty obvious one, but online stores provide buyers with access to a huge selection of golf clubs. Online stores can stock many times what a physical store can as they are not limited to the space available in a traditional retail store. Some of the larger online stores have access to industrial-sized warehouses to store their inventory.

In addition to a huge range of products in online stores, you can shop at virtually hundreds of online stores around the world. I've probably got access to a dozen or so stores within an hour's drive of my house....no such limitation when shopping online.

Specialization

Because online stores have access to a global market, it can be feasible for them to specialize in a certain category of golf equipment, rather than have to stock a broad range of items. For example, if I'm in the market for a putter, I can go to an online store that sells only putters. Chances are I'm going to be able to find a putter that's right for me, and because they specialize in putters, I'm likely to have access to expert advice.

Price

While you can easily compare prices to find the best online deals, it's also possible to get access to great discounts and offers. I'll cover this in more detail in the tips below, but many online golf stores offer discount coupons through online affiliates....much more so than traditional retail stores.

Convenience

Online stores never close, meaning that you can browse or shop whenever you please - usually after dinner, and when the kids have gone to bed for me! You can also compare prices between stores within a matter of minutes, rather than having to drive across town or wait on the end of the phone for a store assistant to get to back to you.

Information

Many online stores provide buying guides and some even have blogs which provide additional information about equipment. While physical stores often have knowledgeable staff, it's a bit more hit-and-miss. Video tutorials are also becoming more popular to help golfers choose the right equipment for their game.

4 Things to Consider Before Buying Golf Clubs

Every year golf manufacturers come out with new improvements for their golf clubs. If you watch golf on TV you are inundated with those commercials.

With all the advertisements and endorsements from professional golfers, it is impossible to know what the best golf clubs are for you. Some of us are swayed by our favorite golfer and other by the perceived best manufacturer. The selection of clubs and pricing is extensive and confusing too.

So how does the average weekend golfer choose the best golf clubs for his or her game?

There are 5 things that you need to consider before you make your purchase.

1.) Budget - This is the most important starting point. Golf clubs can range from under $100 for a putter to a couple of thousand for a set. The average cost of a new set of irons, can range from $400 to $1500 depending on the manufacturer.

Pick a price range that fits your budget and stick to it. There are plenty of choices.

2.) Shaft - The stiffness and type of shaft that you have on your golf clubs will make a huge difference in how well you strike the ball. If you shaft is too stiff, you won't get the flex you need to generate good club head speed. This will affect the distance and direction of your shot.

If the shaft is not stiff enough, your shaft will flex way too much and this will have a different affect all together.

3.) Clubhead - Should your irons be forged or cavity backed? Many of the professional golfers prefer to use forged irons, but in the last few years we have seen more of them switch to cavity backed irons. The cavity back iron has a larger sweet spot and is more forgiving.

Another thing to consider is what type of woods I should have in my bag. (We know they are no longer made out of wood) The 460cc driver is the most common, but there are different shapes, sizes and alloys being used depending on the manufacturer.

If you are going for a new driver, it is a good idea to consider replacing all your woods. Having your driver and 3 wood matching will give you a better feel.

4.) Hybrids - Hybrids have become more popular. They are very versatile and many have replaced their 3, 4 and 5 irons with hybrids. This is one change that I would seriously consider. Many amateurs struggle with the long irons, so this is really a no-brainer.

When it is time to purchase new golf clubs, take time to investigate before you plunge in. It is definitely worth the time and effort. I would suggest that you try out a few different brands before you buy.
